Pearl Jewelry FAQs

Are pearls a good investment?

If you buy high quality pearls, they are a good investment. Many people buy pearls when they find them at a good price for their quality and just hang onto them. Women who invest in pearls sometimes wear them on special occasions. Other pearl collectors never wear them. They just keep them safe until they decide to sell them or pass them down to their kids.

What are the upsides of buying a set of pearl jewelry as opposed to buying the pieces separately?

When you buy a set of jewelry, you know that all the pearls in the set were chosen to match. This way not only do all the pearls on the necklace match each other, the pearls in the necklace match those in the bracelet. So there is more chance that they are all matching, and more valuable. Also, buying each piece separately usually ends up costing more than buying a set.

Are pearls harvested in an environmentally friendly way?

Cultured pearls are made on pearl farms. Oysters are “nucleated” so that they will be encouraged to grow a pearl. Then when an appropriate amount of time has passed, they are harvested. Since the oysters are grown in a certain area, the fishermen know exactly where to get them. So they don’t harvest anywhere else. This helps to protect natural populations of oysters. Also, many farms use species of oysters that can have the pearl extracted without killing the oyster.
